For this job rehabstudio were asked by google adwords to come up with ideas to help them celebrate their 10th birthday whilst saying thank you to it’s customers using a personalised video and infographics.

The channel was built in AS3 and utilises Bulk Loader to managed the preloading of pages and assets. A purpose built, video player was created to handle the personalisation elements, and a combination of away3dlite, nape physics engine, and google maps was used to bring the infrographics to life. The site was localised into 46 different languages including RTL languages such as Hebrew and Arabic.

The channel received almost 2 million hits in it’s first two weeks.

The brief for this job was to create a site showcasing Tetra Pak’s Circle Of Protection campaign, incorporating motion driven navigation, animation, and video. The site needed to be dynamic and CMS driven, also allowing for localisation.

The site was built in AS3 and utilises Bulk Loader to managed the preloading of pages and assets, as well as SWF Address to create deep links into the site. The site utilises your webcamto detect movement & gestures allowing the user to navigate around the site. Video is served from Brightcoves streaming service, and the site is driven by the rehabstudio CMS.

This is the new site I have built for Imagey Nation a creative production studio delivering high-end CGI, live-action, photo-retouching, and post production for the film, music and advertising industries.

The site was built using using Flash Develop, AS3, and the Flex 4 SDK, it utilises Bulk Loader to manage intelligent loading and preloading of pages and assets, as well as using SWF Address to implement deep linking into the site. As part of the build I also created a video player, image manipulation module and a slide-show utility.

To make the site dynamic I had to build a content management system, to achieve this I installed wordpress and used the Pods CMS plug-in to create bespoke module the client could use to create case studies and upload media assets.

Sadly I was brought onto the project after the sites design had already completed and so was unable to influence the clients thinking when it came to layout, functionality, or looks and feel, however I am still very happy with the overall outcome.

You can see the site at www.imageynation.com.

Last week I found myself needing to convert a colour image to black and white and here’s how I did it!

import flash.filters.ColorMatrixFilter;
import fl.motion.AdjustColor;
//==========================
var color : AdjustColor;
var colorMatrix : ColorMatrixFilter;
var matrix : Array;
var filterBW : Array;
color = new AdjustColor();
color.brightness = 20;
color.contrast = 20;
color.hue = 0;
color.saturation = -100;
matrix = color.CalculateFinalFlatArray();
colorMatrix = new ColorMatrixFilter(matrix);
filterBW = [colorMatrix];

Now we can set the .filters property of our image to be filterBW, and shazam you have a black and white image.

I have been thinking about building a visualiser since 2003 (when I saw one on www.2advanced.com) and have finally found the time to look into AS3′s computeSpectrum as well as Richard Lords’ FLiNT Particle System and came up with this example which uses Jamie T’s – The Man’s Machine (which you can buy here).

All in all it’s quite simple really, basically just an enter frame that runs the computeSpectrum() and then you use the data from that to effect the particles. I’ve attached my flash develop project and the source code below if your intrested in having a dig about, it could be useful if your interested in how to setup the computeSpectrum() or the FLiNT particle system.

You can see the Visualiser at www.visualdialects.co.uk/visualiser/

Get the Visualiser Source from www.visualdialects.co.uk/visualiser/Visualiser.zip

Just recently I had some time and decided to take a look at the flash api for google maps. Initially I didn’t have a plan, I just wanted to start using the api, but once I realised how easy it was to get setup I thought I should try and do something a little bit more interesting, so I decided to see if I could track and tag myself across London.

The first nurdle to over come was how to track myself, I knew the a lot of mobile phones now use GPS for tracking and mapping and so started to look into weather I would be table to tap into this functionality in the same way google maps already does on the iPhone. After some quick googling I found an iPhone GPS tracking app (Insta Mapper) which would take my GPS coordinates at user defined intervals and publish them out to the Insta Mapper website where they can be recalled through the Insta Mapper api. Once this was done all I needed to do was to pull the feed into my flash app and feed the cooordinates into my google maps object, and voilà I have a little icon sitting on top of my map marking where I am.

So I can track myself across london, now to tag my most visited places to give these coordinates some meaning, so currently I am recording my coordinates at places of interest and adding them into an xml file along with a description. Then by doing some comparisons between coordinates and setting some distance thresholds I can tell whether I am in a place of interest and if so display it’s description hurrah. This tagging system isn’t the most elegant solution, it would be much better to have some sort of interface where I can review my locations on a map and then tag them, I could possibly use WordPress to ahieve this but as time is at a premium at the moment I went for the quick, easy, and dirty option.

One major problem with this solution is that you have to run the Insta Mapper App continuously it does not run in the background which basically makes tracking yourself at all times impossible. However some clever people have created tools to jailbreak your iPhone so you can install lots of lovely no apple approved apps, such as Backgrounder an iPhone app which allows you to control which apps are currently running on your iPhone, when they run, and whether to run them in the background. Using this little gem of an app I am able to run Insta Mapper continuously in the background and so am now able to track myself at all times without tieing up my phone.

I do have some more devlopement I’d like to do on this project, like checking my speed of movement so I can tell whether I’m walking or on a train, plain or automobile. I’d Also like to be able to predict if in transit what the final destination might be, possibly based upon my favourite locations and some directional trending, but these things will have to wait for another day.

You can track me here
